Missing one or more of your teeth can be devastating, and greatly affect your life in many ways. You may feel self conscious or embarrassed about talking and smiling without your tooth. Eating and chewing your favorite foods can become challenging. Did you know that missing a tooth also compromises your oral health? The health of your jawbone and remaining teeth are in jeopardy when your tooth is not there. The good news is that your cosmetic dentist Dr. Schramm can help you replace your missing teeth with a number of different options.
Dental Implants
An implant utilizes a titanium root that is surgically placed into your jawbone and integrated over time to create a stable foundation for your new tooth, or crown. After the appropriate healing time has passed, your new crown will attach to your “root” through an abutment. This makes for a very durable and natural replacement for your missing tooth.
Dental implants are by far the best option for replacing a missing tooth because they replace both your root and tooth. When your tooth is missing your jawbone will begin to resorb or lose density over time, having a new root in place ensures that your jawbone will remain stimulated and healthy. Your remaining teeth will also begin to shift without a replacement, so a dental implant will fill that space and protect the health of your remaining teeth.
Dental implants do require the patient to be in good health and enough healthy bone structure to support it. Dr. Schramm will evaluate your mouth through an examination and x-rays to determine if dental implants are a good option for you. Dr. Schramm is able to both place and restore implants in the comfort of his own office so that you won’t have to go elsewhere for surgery.
Crown and Bridge
If dental implants aren’t right for you, another option is to fill the open space with a
dental bridge. This treatment uses two of your healthy teeth as anchors for a prosthetic tooth that fills the open space. Your anchor teeth will be built up with crowns that will support the prosthetic tooth. This can be a good option for patients missing more than one tooth.
Dentures and Partials
Dentures are removable appliances designed to replace a full arch of missing teeth, while partials are a removable option for patients who still may have multiple healthy teeth remaining. Both dentures and partials will help to restore form and function to your smile so that you’re able to talk and eat again. Dental implants are sometimes used to support dentures, providing a more snug and secure fit.
