You’ve always taken excellent care of your smile. You brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste that also whitens, and you floss your teeth every night before bed. Even so, you may still notice that your smile just isn’t as white as it used to be. Fortunately, you don’t have to settle for a smile that is less than bright and white. Dr. Schramm and his staff are here to help. At Schramm Dentistry we offer
teeth whitening Charlotte residents can count on to give them a fabulous smile.
Despite your best efforts with brushing and flossing at home—and our best efforts to clean and polish your teeth at regularly scheduled checkups—your teeth can still become stained and discolored. Some of the reasons include:
- The food you eat and the beverages you drink. Berries, tomatoes, chocolate, coffee, tea, cola and red wine are all common causes of tooth staining.
- Bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, which can darken the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
- Smoking and chewing tobacco. The nicotine in these can seep into your teeth and causing intrinsic staining in the dentin of your tooth.
- Microscopic cracks. These cracks may be invisible to the naked eye, but they can hid debris that discolors and stains your teeth.
- Certain medications. The antibiotic tetracycline taken while teeth were developing, as well as some kinds of chemotherapy, can lead to gray staining.
- Traumatic injury that leads to discoloration within the tooth.
A Whiter Smile from your Charlotte Dentist
For teeth whitening, Dr. Schramm is proud to offer Opalescence®, the first take-home whitening system approved by the American Dental Association. Opalescence’s active ingredient is carbamide peroxide. Delivered as a viscous and sticky gel that adheres better to teeth, Opalescence comes in a variety of strengths. You and Dr. Schramm will decide which is appropriate for the extent and type of staining and discoloration you have.
In addition to the whitening ingredient, Opalescence contains PF—potassium nitrate and fluoride—which help reduce the tooth sensitivity that some patients experience after whitening.
We’ll give you custom-fitted mouth trays that you’ll fill with the Opalescence gel, which comes in convenient syringes. Wear the gel-filled trays according to Dr. Schramm’s instructions. You’ll begin to see results even after one treatment, but the grandest results will be evident after a full two-weeks of whitening.
