Never ignore a toothache. When a tooth sustains an injury or has multiple fillings or extensive decay, pain and sensitivity often result. Root canal therapy treats symptoms of tooth infection and dysfunction, preserving healthy tooth structure for years.
Why Charlotte root canal therapy?
The inner pulp of a tooth contains nerves, a blood supply and connective tissue. While important during adolescence when young teeth mature, adults function well without soft pulp.

Schramm Dentistry in Charlotte, NC gives the dental patient with tooth pain, hot or cold sensitivity, a change in tooth color or swelling at the gum line reason to smile. No longer dreaded as a lengthy agonizing dental service, Dr. Arthur R. Schramm accomplishes the “root canal” in 2 visits of about an hour, leaving a sickly tooth healthy and beautiful.
What does a “root canal” involve?
Dr. Schramm carefully examines a patient who complains of a toothache. He may exert gentle pressure on the tooth, visually inspect it and the gum line and also take x-rays or other kinds of imaging. If he determines that the inner pulp of one or more inner tooth chambers, or root canals, appears diseased, this local Charlotte dentist recommends endodontic or root canal therapy.
After administering local anesthesia (a pain shot) to numb the area, Dr. Schramm drills a small pilot hole into the tooth, accessing the inner chamber. He inserts a series of tiny files to scrape the canal free of infection and debris and floods the chamber with an antimicrobial medication to heal infection. He fills and seals the chamber with a rubbery substance called gutta percha.
Dr. Schramm repeats the procedure on the other root canals as needed and places a temporary filling or crown over the tooth. He also takes a dental impression to send to a dental lab for fabrication of a porcelain crown to cover the remaining tooth structure. At home, the patient takes over the counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen for mild pain as needed.
At the next dental visit, Dr. Schramm fits the tooth with the custom crown, adjusting it for bite and alignment. The restoration is now complete, conferring natural chewing, speaking and great aesthetics, too. Preserving a natural tooth, instead of extracting it, strengthens surrounding teeth and supporting jawbone, too. Plus, the patient does not have to consider tooth replacement options such as fixed bridgework, a partial denture or a dental implant.
