Brushing your teeth is something you simply do every day; most of the time, we don’t even pause to think about the brush we’re using to clean our pearly whites. The truth is that knowing how to properly maintain your toothbrush actually makes a big difference in how clean your teeth really are. At
Schramm Dentistry in
Charlotte, NC,
Dr. Arthur Schramm and his team offer helpful advice to patients of all ages, keeping teeth and gums healthy for beautiful, confident smiles.
Simple Toothbrush Care: More Important Than You May Think!
Your toothbrush is a vital tool in the maintenance of a healthy mouth. Making sure that it does its job well doesn’t have to be a challenge; simply keep these tips from our team in mind:
- Replace your toothbrush often. Studies have proven that toothbrushes that are more than three months old are not as effective at removing plaque and food particles as new ones are. Replace yours (or the removable head if you use a sonic toothbrush) every 90 days or so.
- Also replace it after illness. Regardless of how well you clean your toothbrush after each use, the germs that cause you to feel sick can still linger. Don’t set yourself up for another bout of illness – play it safe and get a replacement.
- Keep your toothbrush safe from germs. Though it may seem to go without saying, sharing your toothbrush with anyone else is highly discouraged for a number of reasons. Even if the person you’re sharing with isn’t sick, the bacteria in their mouths can still cause problems for you.
- Avoid the toilet! Keep your toothbrush at least six feet away from the toilet to avoid contamination from droplets that spray out upon flushing. In fact, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of closing the toilet’s lid before flushing each time just to be sure.
